The research team initially focused on the action of Cyclosporin A (CsA), a drug that prevents the rejection of transplanted organs and the fight against autoimmune diseases. It also reduces the activity of protein SFRP1 that prevents the development and growth of hair follicles.
However, because of its many side effects, CsA has never been considered to treat baldness. That’s why researchers turned to WAY-316606, a drug that fights osteoporosis and also targets the SFRP1 protein.
Tests were performed on hair follicle samples provided by about 40 patients with baldness. After just two days of treatment under WAY-316606, the bulbs started producing new hair.
