Can You Combine Scalp Micropigmentation and a Hair Transplant?

Can You Combine Scalp Micropigmentation and a Hair Transplant?

Jump To

Hair restoration no longer needs to be one-size-fits-all. At Gro Clinics, we often help clients explore how hair transplants and scalp micropigmentation (SMP) can complement each other to create the look of a denser, fuller head of hair. When carefully planned, these two treatments can work together—either in sequence or combination—depending on your goals, timing, and long-term plans.

Understanding the Difference

What is a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a doctor-led procedure that involves relocating healthy hair follicles from the back or sides of the scalp to areas where hair has thinned or receded. These follicles are typically more resistant to the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which contributes to pattern hair loss.

What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

SMP is a non-invasive, cosmetic procedure that applies tiny pigment deposits to the scalp, creating the appearance of shaved or closely cropped hair. It does not promote hair growth but can help reduce the contrast between the scalp and hair, enhancing the look of density.

SMP is available at our Melbourne clinic. If you're considering this treatment, our trained advisors can provide more information about suitability and outcomes.

How the Two Can Work Together

After a Hair Transplant

Some clients choose to undergo SMP after a hair transplant to enhance the visual density of their results. In these cases, SMP is typically performed around nine months post-procedure, after full healing has occurred. This helps ensure pigment retention and allows the transplanted follicles to settle into their new growth cycle.

Potential benefits of combining SMP post-transplant may include:

  • Improved appearance of density between grafts
  • Blending of visible scalp in areas with lower graft numbers
  • Camouflaging of visible scarring from previous transplant procedures
  • Support for appearance during activities where hair may appear thinner (e.g. swimming, sweating)

Before a Hair Transplant

Some clients begin their restoration journey with SMP before committing to a hair transplant. When planned appropriately, SMP does not impact a person’s future eligibility for transplant procedures. The pigment is placed in the superficial layer of the skin and does not interfere with graft placement or blood supply.

Advantages of beginning with SMP may include:

  • Immediate visual improvement while preparing for a future procedure
  • Foundation for blending post-transplant growth
  • Camouflaging redness or inflammation post-transplant

Important Considerations When Combining Both

If you’re planning to combine SMP and a hair transplant, coordination between your treatment providers is essential. At Gro, our advisors will help you:

  • Assess your donor area and suitability for transplant
  • Map a realistic hairline that can be maintained through both treatments
  • Schedule your treatments for optimal healing and visual outcomes

We recommend waiting at least nine months after your hair transplant before undergoing SMP, or discussing future transplant plans before starting SMP first. If you're unsure about timing, you can book a private consultation with a Gro advisor.
