How much will my hair transplant cost? This is the question we hear probably more than any other here at Gro. The answer, however, is more complex than just a number. Not all hair transplants are created equal – different clinics offer different levels of quality, experience, technology, results and more.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We’ve all made a decision simply based on price at least once in our lives, only to experience the disappointment of a poor-quality product or service. Some of us may have even felt the sting of having to pay twice for the same thing – first for the inferior product or service and the second time to fix up or replace it.
In this article, we’ll go over all the crucial components that define how much a hair transplant costs. It’s a lifelong investment, so it’s important to be fully aware of what the price tag is going to get you. We’ll even give you a couple of examples of Gro hair transplants and the cost for each procedure.
It’s not as simple as more grafts = better value
When it comes to hair transplant procedure, many people assume that they should assess the cost on the number of grafts (hair follicles) to be extracted and implanted. The larger the number of grafts, the better the value for money, right? Not quite.
Older and less sophisticated hair transplant techniques require more of your precious donor follicles to be harvested. Modern techniques, on the other hand, require fewer follicles to achieve the desired result. With the more recent techniques, caring for the donor area in case another transplant is needed in the future is high on the list of priorities.
Way too many a time we’ve seen patients come to Gro following a botched procedure, with little to no option for a remedy due to the damage inflicted on the donor site.
The cost components of a hair transplant
As said before, not all hair transplants are created equal. Multiple factors affect the price point of a hair transplant at different clinics and locations. Here are some essential factors to keep an eye out for when choosing your hair transplant procedure provider.
1. Method of follicle extraction & implantation
Traditionally, healthy hair (donor) follicles have been extracted in one of two ways: FUT (follicular unit transplantation) and FUE (follicular unit extraction). Both of these methods result in scarring to the donor area, impact follicle survival rate and can leave an unnatural, doll-like final appearance.
Fear not, though! Research and development, along with decades of expertise has lead to the creation of the Precise Follicle Placement method (PFP), which leaves no scarring and no visible trace of a hair transplant.
Let’s look into the three methods currently available on the market.
With both FUT and FUE hair transplant procedure methods, holes are created in the treatment area to receive the grafts by forceps. This allows minimum control over the depth, angle and direction of the hair, increasing the chances of an unnatural-looking result.
FUT or follicular unit transplant
FUT, often referred to as ‘strip procedure’, is when the hairs are removed from the back of the head in a long thin strip of scalp and divided into single units under a microscope. This division of the follicles traumatises them, thereby reducing the survival rate. The site where the scalp is removed is then sewn back together. This procedure is relatively cost-effective, however, it comes at a price, involving:
- Scarring that can be visible with shorter hairstyles
- Longer recovery time
- Reduced follicle survival rate
FUE or follicular unit extraction
FUE involves the use of a punch to make a small circular cut in the skin around a hair follicle or group of follicles, removing them from the scalp and leaving a small open hole, which heals to a small scar.
It’s common to see multiple hairs in a follicle (2-4 hairs in one follicle, for example) to be cut apart and manipulated to inflate the number of hairs implanted: a follicle containing three hairs becomes 3 poor quality grafts. This harms the result of the transplant and the rate of regrowth, with some loss rates as high as 40%.
With both FUT and FUE hair transplant procedure methods, holes are created in the treatment area to insert the grafts with forceps. This allows little control over the depth, angle and direction of the hair, increasing the chances of an unnatural-looking result.
Precise Follicle Placement
Here at Gro clinics, we use the Precise Follicle Placement method, which is the most advanced and delicate hair transplant technique available. It involves no scalpels, no stitches, no detectable scarring and is a very comfortable procedure.
We extract the follicles with a specialist tool, less than 1mm in diameter, designed to delicately extract the hairs so that the scalp heals with no detectable scarring.
The grafts are implanted using another specialised tool, which allows our doctors to precisely control the density, angle, depth and direction of each and every hair, ensuring the results look entirely natural.
What’s more, we’re the only hair transplant clinics in Australia to store the grafts in a growth solution called HypoThermosol, which increases the survival rate of the follicles up to as high as 100%.
2. The experience and qualifications of the staff
Hair transplants can be performed by technicians, nurses or doctors. Some clinics may even use a robot for extraction to cut costs! When it comes to technicians, the level of skills and experience varies dramatically depending on what part of the world you’re in.
Each and every patient is an individual, and therefore every hair transplant must be adapted and customised.
At Gro, all procedures are performed by a qualified Australian doctor from start to finish. At pre-surgery and follow-up appointments, you’ll be looked after by Australian registered nurses.
3. Tools and technology
At Gro, our specially developed hair transplant tools ensure top-quality results. Extensive research and development has been invested in to achieve our delicate hair transplant method that delivers natural results with no scarring.
4. Facilities and patient care
From the time you first contact Gro Australia, to the time that you have your last follow-up appointment, we want you to feel comfortable and confident. Gro’s hair transplant facilities are second to none and patient care is our number one priority. The hair transplant process involves:
- An initial consultation and hair loss diagnosis
- Pre-surgery consultation
- Surgery
- Follow up appointments at 1 week, 1 month and then 3 months, 6 months and 12 months post-procedure. You will see the majority of the result by 12 weeks with the final result visible at 12 months post-procedure.
5. Length of procedure
The actual hair transplant procedure can take up to 10-12 hours in one sitting. We work efficiently, but we don’t rush it because every single hair is implanted in a precise manner by an experienced doctor. This way, we achieve natural results for all our clients.
Gro hair transplant results
All these factors feed into what level of results a clinic will be able to provide. At Gro, we want to offer every client only the highest quality in both end results and care. That’s why we have fine-tuned our process to the point where we can guarantee 100% natural-looking results on your procedure.
Gro is the only hair transplant & hair loss clinic in Australia to guarantee natural results for all hair loss concerns including male pattern baldness, thinning, receding hairline and so on.
Questions you need to ask
A hair transplant procedure is designed to give life-long results. Your decision should not rely solely on price as that may lead to a decision you regret – and a costly mistake in the long term.
When deciding between hair transplant clinics, ask the following questions:
- What is the total hair transplant cost? E.g., will I need another hair transplant after? Are there any additional fees? Do you charge for follow up appointments?
- Do you guarantee natural results?
- Who will be performing the procedure (robot, technician, doctor) and what are their qualifications and experience? Can I see before and after photos from the person who will be doing my procedure?
- What is the post-surgery procedure and how long will I need to take off work?
- Will I have a scar?
