FUE Hair Transplant Explained by Dr Adam Cho

FUE Hair Transplant Explained by Dr Adam Cho

Jump To

At Gro Clinics, we perform FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant procedures.

Dr Adam Cho (MED0001200342), a registered medical practitioner with experience in hair transplantation at Gro, explains how the FUE method differs from older strip-based techniques.

What Is FUE?

FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction. It is a hair restoration technique where individual follicles are removed from a donor area, usually the back or sides of the head and then carefully implanted into areas where more density is desired.

This process does not involve a linear incision, as seen in traditional strip-based approaches (FUT). Instead, follicles are removed one by one using specialised tools. Suitability depends on your hair characteristics, goals and donor area.

FUE vs. FUT — Understanding the Difference

Both FUE and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) are medically recognised hair transplant techniques, but they differ in how donor follicles are obtained:

  • FUE: Involves extracting individual hair follicles using small punch tools. This approach results in very small, circular wounds that typically heal within days.
  • FUT: Involves removing a strip of scalp tissue, from which follicular units are dissected before being implanted.

Because FUE involves tiny incisions rather than a single strip, it often provides a more discreet healing process. However, each technique has its own considerations depending on the individual’s hair type, goals, and donor area condition. These factors are assessed during a consultation with a Gro hair growth advisor.

Precision and Recovery

FUE is a meticulous process. Extracting and implanting each follicle individually allows doctors to work with fine detail, aligning growth direction, depth, and density to blend with existing hair.

Because the incisions are small, some people report shorter healing periods, but experiences differ based on skin and hair characteristics and adherence to aftercare instructions.
