Hair Transplant Costs

We get it - You just want to know the price.

A hair transplant is a big long-term step in your life. It's natural to want to know more, from pricing to the procedure. But hair transplant pricing isn't one-size-fits-all.

At Gro, we assess your individual needs to provide an accurate estimate, with no hidden fees or surprise costs. From early signs of hair loss to late-stage balding, we tailor our plan to what's right for you.

Choosing quality for the long term

Pricing doesn't tell the whole story with hair transplants. More grafts don't necessarily equate to better results. It needs to be a balance between donor area care and precise follicle placement.

Long-term quality delivers the best value. We focus on:

  • Doctor-led procedures
  • Scalp assessments
  • Personalised treatment plans
  • Donor area preservation
  • A refined approach to FUE hair transplants
  • Local aftercare to help you manage recovery and long-term hair growth

Our hair transplant service is designed for long-lasting results, and we tailor the costs to you.

What your investment covers at Gro Clinics

Tailored treatment, clear pricing

With Gro Clinics, you get an exact figure, in writing, before you commit to any decision. Nothing appears later that wasn't included in that quote. No hidden fees or add-ons.

At Gro Clinics, we provide personalised hair restoration plans based on a clinical assessment. While your quote can vary based on several factors, it depends on your scalp health, the number of grafts and your personalised plan.

And if a procedure isn't the right move for you, the conversation ends there, not with a quote.

Factors that influence hair transplant costs

Your procedure cost is guided by clinical recommendation. The following are the main factors that can affect the cost of your hair transplant.

Precise Follicle Placement Method

At Gro, we have a Precise Follicle Placement method, which is our refined approach to FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). This method involves using specialised tools to extract and implant follicles with greater control over angle, depth and direction. We use a microscopic punch tool to carefully remove individual hair follicles one by one to help preserve the donor area. We then carefully implant the individual follicles directly into the treatment area, to align with the natural angle and direction of your existing hair.

Our doctor-led method requires technical precision and is designed to minimise visible scarring and for long-term results.

PFP is Gro's internal method under the broader FUE category and may not lead to different clinical outcomes. Results vary from person to person.

Experience of the Clinical Team

At Gro, your AHPRA-registered doctor reviews your personalised plan, carefully designs the natural hairline and performs the hair transplant procedure.

The team is led by Dr Adam Cho (MED0001200342), who is a Fellow of the Faculty of Medicine of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery with over a decade of experience in clinical governance, risk management and medical leadership.

He takes a hands-on approach to shape Gro's high standard of care and mentor every Gro Clinics doctor in the team:

"My approach is simple: treat every patient the way I would want to be treated, and always ask what I would do if I were in their position. I believe in honest advice, realistic expectations, and careful planning, underpromising where needed."

- Dr Adam Cho

Other clinics may use technicians, nurses or robotic extractions to perform the procedure, rather than AHPRA-registered doctors.

Tools and technology

Before advising if a hair transplant is the right move for you, we perform a full scalp assessment. In some clinics, we use an advanced AI scalp scanner and a 3D Transplanner for a precise overview of your scalp, hairline and transplant options.

During the procedure, your AHPRA-registered doctor uses a minimally invasive microscopic punch tool and preserves extracted follicles in HypoThermosol, a growth solution that helps maintain follicle viability.

We are committed to clinically researched hair transplant technology.

Aftercare and support

The cost of your hair transplant includes a structured post-procedure recovery plan, including reviews at week 1, month 1, and up to 18 months after that to ensure you feel supported.

Your hair growth advisor guides all aftercare, and our medical team oversees it, and we are available for any questions or concerns you may have during this process.

Local Care

At Gro Clinics, you have local access to fully qualified AHPRA-registered doctors with a consistent quality of care before, during and after your procedure. You can reach out to your local Gro team at all times, a commitment an overseas clinic may not be able to offer. You can schedule your appointment and recovery time to suit your own personal commitments.

While package deals to countries like Turkey or Thailand can seem tempting due to the low prices, overseas hair transplants can carry several hidden costs and medical risks that a domestic clinic does not.

What Your Hair Tells Us

A hair transplant may also be affected by the nature of your hair and your coverage goals:

Factor 01 of 05

Number of grafts

One of the most significant factors affecting hair transplant costs is how many grafts your surgery requires. Your personalised quote is based on the number of grafts recommended during your assessment.

Factor 02 of 05

Size of treatment area

The size of the area needing a transplant can heavily affect total costs. Treating a small recession at the temples differs significantly from restoring a full crown or hairline, and longer treatments will require more time, precision and hair grafts.

Factor 03 of 05

Hair type and characteristics

Thickness, texture, curl patterns, scalp colour, and hair contrast can affect the techniques we use in your procedure. Curly or thick hair may also provide more coverage than fine or straight hair, so your hair type can affect how many grafts you need.

Factor 04 of 05

Complexity of your case

Factors that can affect a hair transplant include previous hair transplants, donor hair quality, scalp scarring, or uneven hair loss caused by conditions such as alopecia areata.

Factor 05 of 05

Your density goals

How dense you want the targeted area to look will affect the number of hair grafts and overall procedure time. It may also require additional sessions. Our clinicians will let you know whether your goals are possible before you commit to a procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our doctors answer the questions we frequently get asked:

How much does a hair transplant cost at Gro?

The exact cost of a hair transplant procedure depends on the number of grafts you need, your hair restoration goals and your clinical suitability. They typically range from around $12,000 to $17,000. Your consultants will provide a tailored, no-obligation quote after an initial assessment.

Can I pay for my hair transplant in instalments?

Yes. We offer flexible payment options through third-party finance providers. Conditions apply, and eligibility can be discussed with your consultant.

Can I use my super to fund my hair transplants?

Early release of superannuation is sometimes possible under ATO compassionate grounds. However, eligibility depends on your situation and the ATO's final decision. Access tends to be available only in very limited circumstances, and should only be considered as a last resort where all other options have been exhausted.

Does a hair transplant cost more in Australia?

In terms of upfront pricing, a hair transplant in Australia may cost more than in countries like Turkey or Thailand.

However, travelling to and from these clinics often comes with hidden costs you won't face with a local Australian or New Zealand clinic. These include:

  • Cost of travel: Unless you have found a package deal a clinic offers that includes flights and accommodations, you will need to pay for a ticket to and from the country you have chosen.
  • Accommodation and travel: Without a package deal, you will need to pay out of pocket for your hotel and travel fees to reach the clinic. Keep in mind, this will also include recovery time if you are not flying back immediately, which can seriously blow up accommodation costs.
  • Time off work and recovery: In order to use an overseas hair transplant clinic, you will need to take a week or more off work to travel, settle and recover, either abroad or once you're back.

Comparatively, with an Australian clinic, you will only need to pay for the procedural plan.

Are there any hidden fees in hair transplant procedure?

At Gro Clinics, we give a complete overview of your fees in our no-obligation quote. Our quote will include the AHPRA-registered doctor hairline design, local anaesthesia if needed, PFP procedure and a complete aftercare plan. Same price, same inclusions and same standard at all of our clinics.

Some other clinics may invoice differently, including separate consultation charges, operating theatre fees, separate billing for an anaesthetist, post-op medications, specialised aftercare and more.

What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant involves moving healthy hair follicles from one area of the scalp to another. At Gro, this is done using a technique called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), performed or overseen by registered doctors.

How does a hair transplant work?

We extract hair follicles from the donor area and carefully implant them into areas of thinning or loss. Gro's method uses precision tools and our internal follicle placement technique.

Is a hair transplant permanent?

Transplanted follicles are intended to be long-lasting. However, results vary, and ongoing hair loss in untreated areas can occur. If the root cause of hair loss isn't treated, transplanted hair may also be affected. A clinician can set realistic expectations during your assessment.

What should I be wary of when choosing a hair transplant?

A few red flags and risks to be wary of before committing to a hair transplant include:

  • No doctor involvement: Some clinics use technicians to plan and perform the surgery, with little to no involvement from AHPRA-registered doctors. At Gro, all our procedures are overseen or performed by our experienced and qualified doctors.
  • High-volume clinics: Some clinics may have a high volume of clients or promise 'unlimited' grafts. At Gro Clinics, we tailor each treatment plan to our patients' unique features, including hair type, scalp health, colour, and more.
  • High-pressure sales: Urgent 'day one' sales, discounts or rushed booking tactics may not have long-term aftercare baked into the pricing. At Gro clinics, we do not rush your planning stage, and if you are not compatible with surgery, we let you know ASAP instead of forcing a sale.
  • Lack of transparency: Hair transplants are not simple, and details like the exact method used, warnings about shock loss and the typical recovery procedure matter to your long-term results.

What other treatments does Gro offer besides hair transplants?

In addition to hair transplants, our AHPRA-registered doctors offer the following services, depending on eligibility:

  • Prescription haircare (following clinical approval)
  • Growth Factor Therapy (e.g. PRF)
  • Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)
  • Deep scalp cleansing treatments
  • Home-use support products

Am I eligible for a hair transplant?

You may be eligible for a hair transplant depending on the exact cause of your hair loss, the stage of hair loss, your general health, and your clinical suitability. Our consultant will guide you through what determines your eligibility and will let you know during consultation if you are not compatible with a hair transplant.

How long does it take to recover from a hair transplant?

Recovery from the initial procedure may take 4 weeks with time off work, lifestyle restrictions and temporary limitations on activity. Individual recovery times and result timelines vary.

You may experience minor redness, scabbing and swelling for 1-2 weeks after your initial surgery. Within 2-4 weeks, scabbing may clear up, but you may experience temporary shedding. This is completely normal and is known as shock loss.

How long does a hair transplant take to work?

Hair growth varies from person to person. Many clients notice shedding in the first few weeks, followed by gradual regrowth from 3 to 6 months, with more visible changes by 12 months. Crown areas may also take up to 18 months.

Is a hair transplant painful?

Our PFP method is designed to be minimally invasive, with pain management options available. All procedures are performed by experienced registered practitioners with safety measures in place. Individual experiences and pain thresholds may vary, and some post-procedure sensitivity may be part of normal healing.

Does Medicare cover hair transplants?

No, Medicare typically does not cover hair transplants, as hair transplants are considered cosmetic surgery, which is generally not covered. However, if a hair transplant is needed as a result of trauma, burns or other specific medical conditions, it may be eligible for a Medicare rebate under the reconstructive procedure classification.

Please check the Medicare website or consult your doctor or dermatologist to see whether you are eligible.

How much is 3,000 grafts of hair in Australia?

The exact cost of 3,000 hair grafts in Australia varies by surgical technique and clinic rates, but typically ranges from $15,000 to $22,000. Individual grafts typically cost between $5.00 and $12.00 per graft.

At Gro Clinics, we use a FUE method to minimise scarring and recovery time. This procedure typically costs $12,000 to $17,000, although costs may vary depending on the procedure.

Is a hair transplant 100% successful?

No, a hair transplant is not 100% successful, and many factors like skill, preparation, donor hair quality and pre-existing medical conditions may affect the final result.

How long do hair transplants really last?

In most cases, a hair transplant is designed to be long-lasting. The transplanted follicles retain their original characteristics, which means they may not be as affected by DHT, the hormone that causes hair loss.

However, longevity depends on several factors, such as:

  • The stability of your hair loss at the time of surgery
  • Your genetics and age
  • Post-operative care and medical management
  • Your overall scalp health and underlying conditions

How many grafts do I need?

The number of grafts you need depends on the area affected by balding:

  • A hairline or temple-only transplant may need around 800 to 2,000 grafts.
  • A crown restoration may require 1,000 to 2,500 grafts.
  • Complete front-to-back coverage may need 3,500 or more grafts.

At Gro Clinics, we will give you a complete, no-obligation quote on how many grafts you need and any other factors that may affect your transplant.

What happens 20 years after a hair transplant?

Typically, your transplanted hair should keep growing, as the follicles are more resistant to balding and should now function as normal hair follicles. However, transplanted hair can still become finer and grey with age, and natural hair around your head may continue to recede or thin.
